Configure MS-Windows XP/2000/ME/NT/98/95

1. Make sure the modem is installed according to the manufacturers instructions and that its power supply is securely attached. Please also ensure that it has been correctly connected to the correct telephone line.

2. To connect to the Internet, the MS-Windows XP/2000/ME/NT/98/95 CD-ROM may be required if the Communications Options were not initially installed. To check if Dial-Up Networking has been installed:
  • Double click on the My Computer icon
  • Double click on the Control Panel icon
  • Double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon
  • Select the Windows Setup tab
  • Select the Communications tab
  • Click Details...
  • Select Dial-Up Networking if it is not already selected
  • Click OK
If the Dial-Up Networking software was not previously installed, a prompt will appear requesting the MS-Windows XP/2000/ME/NT/98/95 CD-ROM disk to be inserted in order to proceed with installing the Dial-Up Networking software.

3. From the toolbar, click on Start then Programs then Accessories and Dial-Up Networking.

4. Double click on the Make New Connection icon. Any other icons in the Dial-Up Networking window can be ignored as Scorpion Internet will co-exist with most other services.

5. The Dial-Up Networking window contains two boxes and should look similar to the following illustration:

The first box contains the name of the service. Enter Scorpion Internet. The second box should contain the model of modem. If it does not display the correct modem, please install the modem referring to its supplied documentation to ensure it is correctly installed.

6. Click the Next button.

7. The Make New Connection window is displayed. For connections via a standard modem, type in 0845 in the area code box and 003 7777 in the Telephone Number box. Alternatively, for connections via an ISDN terminal adapter, type in 0845 in the area code box and 003 7778 in the Telephone Number box. The last box is the Country Code. Click on the down arrow and select United Kingdom [44]:

This number is charged as a local call anywhere in the UK when dialled directly from a normal telephone exchange line in accordance with tariffs in effect from the telecoms provider.

8. Click the Next button which will then result in the following confirmation screen:

Click the Finish button to return to the Dial-Up Networking window.

9. Using the right-hand mouse button, click on the icon which was just created and select Properties.

10. The General settings will appear. Ensure that the Use area code and Dialling Properties options are selected for correct for the particular area where the system is installed. In the event of dialling difficulties, manually enter the details as follows:

11. Near the lower part of the screen, the Connect Using modem settings can be verified. Although settings may vary based on different modems from different manufacturers, pressing the Configure button will display the current settings. If connection difficulties are subsequently experienced, make a note of any differences between the current settings and the following suggested settings described in the next section. Ultimately, the most ideal choice for the settings is dependent on the actual hardware that may be present. Please check with the hardware supplier if in doubt or if connection problems persist.

12. The General tab will show a screen similar to the following:

14. The Connection tab has two buttons on the lower part. Pressing the Port Settings button will display a screen similar to the following:

Press the Cancel button to continue. These are typical settings. Please check with the hardware supplier if in doubt or if connection problems persist.

15. Pressing the Advanced button will display a screen similar to the following:

Press the Cancel button to continue. These are typical settings. Please check with the hardware supplier if in doubt or if connection problems persist.

16. The Options tab will show a screen similar to the following:

17. The General settings will now appear again. Select the Server Types tab. The following screen will be displayed:

Select PPP Internet Windows XP/2000/ME/NT/98/95 (or similar) as the type of Dial-Up Server. Select the Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP options. Ensure all other options are not selected. The settings should match those in the illustration.

18. Within the Server Types screen, a button called TCP/IP Settings... can be found near the lower part of the screen. Press this button and the following screen will be displayed:

Ensure that the Server Assigned IP Address button is selected with a black dot in the centre and that Specify Name Server Addresses is also selected. Enter the number 212.84.173.66 in the Primary DNS box where each dot here corresponds with the dot in the DNS box. Enter the number 212.84.173.82 in the Secondary DNS box where each dot again corresponds with the dot in the DNS box as before. The Use IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway On Remote Network options should also be selected. The settings should match those in the illustration. Press the OK button to continue.

19. Select the Scripting tab. The following screen will be displayed:

Select the Start Terminal Screen Minimised option. The settings should match those in the illustration.

20. Select the Multilink tab. The following screen will be displayed:

Select the Do Not Use Additional Devices option. The settings should match those in the illustration.

21. Press the OK button to finish the configuration of the Dial-Up Networking software.

22. Depending on some of the settings, it may be wise to restart the computer since some settings do not take effect until after restarting.

23. The Dial-Up Networking window will be visible as before. Double click on the newly created icon. Enter the UserID in the Username box and enter the Password in the Password box.

24. Press the Connect button. The dialler should now dial and connect to the Scorpion Internet service.

25. Start up the preferred web browser software and enjoy using the Internet!


Scorpion Research Internet MS-Windows XP/2000/ME/NT/98/95 Additional Network Information

1. Make sure the Network Adapter is installed according to the manufacturers instructions and that its power supply is securely attached. Please also ensure that it has been correctly connected to the correct network socket.

2. To configure the Network Adapter, the MS-Windows XP/2000/ME/NT/98/95 CD-ROM may be required if the Networking software was not initially installed. To check the Network settings:
  • Double click on the My Computer icon
  • Double click on the Control Panel icon
  • Double click on the Network icon
If the Networking software was not previously installed, a prompt will appear requesting the MS-Windows XP/2000/ME/NT/98/95 CD-ROM disk to be inserted in order to proceed with installing the Networking software.

3. The Configuration tab settings will appear. Select the Client For Microsoft Networks option:

4. The following screen headed Select Network Component Type will be displayed:

Select the Client Network component and press the Add button.

5. The following screen headed Select Network Client will be displayed:

Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers and select Client For Microsoft Networks from the list of Network Clients. Press the OK button.

6. The following screen headed Select Network Component Type will again be displayed:

Select the Adapter component and press the Add button.

7. The following screen headed Select Network Adapters will be displayed:

Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers and select Dial-Up Adapter from the list of Network Adapters. Press the OK button.

8. The following screen headed Select Network Component Type will again be displayed:

Select the Protocol component and press the Add button.

9. The following screen headed Select Network Protocol will be displayed:

Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers and select TCP/IP from the list of Network Protocols. Press the OK button.

10. The following screen headed Select Network Component Type will again be displayed:

The Service option does not apply in this case. Press the Cancel button to continue.

11. The Configuration tab settings window will again appear. Select the Identification tab which will display the following screen:

Enter a unique name for the Computer, a previously defined Workgroup name, and a description of the Computer for identification on the Network.

12. Select the Access Control tab which will display the following screen:

Select the Share Level Access Control and press the OK button.

13. Restart the computer. The changes do not take effect until after restart.
